Much like Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the night before, Manchester City overwhelmed the visitors away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they reinforced their standing at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This result marked successive league losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, placing them seven points off the league leaders with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capacity to balance domestic and continental soccer with a limited squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the week that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they looked tired throughout, the landmark win against PSG clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

Marc Skinner had attempted to make changes with a handful of changes. Ella Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the exclusion of the in-form Malard to the sidelines raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no similar workload concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from injury.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to accumulate for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from City whose potent offense controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a superb initial 45 minutes display that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and left United disorganized. Prior to this fixture, the away side had conceded just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the face of City’s creative prowess.

Early Chances

The warning signs came soon when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Hemp was at the center of everything from the start, taking advantage of the room left by Riviere down United’s wing. Her deliveries were creating danger and led to an attempt for Yui Hasegawa that Sandberg kicked off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forward, their straightforward approach giving them alternatives in the wide areas but they could not challenge the City goalkeeper. City, in the meantime, dominated possession, taunting their rivals and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a set-piece. A ball to the far post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to score. It was Manchester City's 7th header of the season.

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the center from the back, the pitch became spacious for City. The prominent Casparij received possession on the wing before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in possession saw Hemp allowed the room to fire a shot home from distance.

After the Break

The primary change came from Skinner at the break as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and failed to record a solitary shot on goal.

The hosts, on the other hand, could have added to their lead when a delightful Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who finished above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to position them in a strong standing after the opening fixtures.
